History of Parent Organisation – IADVL

First Association formed is the Indian Association of Dermatologists and Venereologists in 1947, the year of India’s Independence. The members were from all over India mostly from North and Western parts of India. It was actively involved in academic programs: clinical meetings, annual conferences. Office bearers were elected. In 1972 Silver Jubilee celebrations were held in Madras. The association had its own Journal by name ‘Indian Journal of Dermatology and Venereology’ with Dr.T.K.Mehta, a Dermatologist from Bombay as the Editor in Chief for a longtime. The notable personalities associated with the organisation were Prof. Khandari, Dr.Sarat Desai, Dr.C.Sobhanadri and Dr.Schrof along with many more.

A parallel association ‘The Indian Society of Dermatology’ was in existence with many Dermatologists from Calcutta and other places. It had on its rolls eminent Dermatologists like Prof.Tambaiah, Prof P.N.Behl, Prof .N.Banerjee and many others, who opposed the co existence of other association and even had its own Journal published from Calcutta in the name of ‘The Journal of Indian Society of Dermatology’ which today is known as the ‘Indian Journal of Dermatology’. Dermatology and Venereology gained importance in 60’s and many medical colleges started post graduate degree and diploma courses. In South India especially Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh started separate post graduate courses in these specialities.

Andhra University was one of the First to start Post graduate degree course in M.D. Dermatology in the year 1968. Prof. B. V. Satyanarayana and Prof. C. Sobhanadri were instrumental in starting these courses in Visakhapatnam and Guntur respectively. The two associations merged together and thus the ‘Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists came into existence in the year 1973.The present emblem and the First National Conferencewas held at Patna with Prof.B.N.Banerjee from Calcutta as its Charter President. It was registered under the Societies act on 8th May 1975 at Lucknow.

IADVL AP Branch- Origin and Progress

The AP branch of IADVL was started in the same year 1973 and was formed with a strong membership of over one hundred members. Dr.RameshPai, Director of Medical Education, AP, inaugurated it on 28th July1973 at Gandhi Hospital, Secunderabad. Prof N.R.V.Swami, Superintendent,Gandhi Hospital Chaired the meeting, Dr.K.Vimala Bai Prof. Emeritus was
unanimously elected as the President with Dr.R.Patnaik as Hony. Secretary. The other office bearers were Vice President Prof. B.V.Sataynarayana, Joint Secretary Dr.M.Subba Rao and Dr.M.Bhaskara Rao as Treasurer. It had on its rolls distinguished members such as Dr. C.T. Hemachandra, Dr.V.S.Joshi, Dr.C.Sobhanadri, Dr.Ramachandra and others whose efforts were shown in the growth of IADVL in AP. The first meeting was held in the auditorium of
Gandhi Hospital, Hyderabad and was addressed by Dr.Ranade one of the senior Dermatologist, Bombay. The emblem was drawn on a black board and the name of the Association written with a piece of chalk. Such was the humble beginning of our Association. Even though annual meetings were held every year since 1973, it was in 1978 that the First State Conference of IADVL was held in the IMA Hall, Koti, Hyderabad withDr.V.S.Joshi as
President and Dr. K.RamaKrsihnaiahasOrganizing secretary. There after state conferences were held regularly every year by successive elected bodies. In the earlier years it was a one day conference and in 1986 under the President ship of Dr.T.S.S.Lakshmi and Dr.K.Udaya Kiran as Secretary it became a two day meet and continues to be so.

The rules and bylaws of IADVL were not precise in the initial years and in 1978 a constitution committee was formed with Dr.A.Krishna from Tamil Nadu as Chairman and Dr.T.Gopinath, Dr.C.K.Jagvikar and Dr.Siddappa as members. They prepared a new constitution with the help of the State Branches and other Association like IMA. It was formally approved and came into existence in the year 1983. At the beginning the annual
membership fee was Rs.30/- and Life membership fee Rs.300/- slowly it was enhanced and presently Life membership fee is Rs.10,332. The IADVL AP Chapter has been very active in the regional and National activities and we are proud that three of our members were elected as National Presidents in various years. Dr.C.Sobhanadri was the first person from AP to be
the National President and Dr.B.Narasimha Rao and Dr.K.K.RajaBabu also served as the National Presidents. The team of Dr.P.Narasimha Rao and Dr.D.B.N.Murthy served as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Association for a period of two years recently. Our state body also hosted the South Zone and National conference several times successfully. Our members
and Postgraduate students play an active role in the regional and national level meetings. IADVL has come a long way since from the humble beginning in 1973 and our state branch has also progressed gaining strength to strength. This is only possible only with the encouragement of our beloved senior members and their guidance as well as with the active
cooperation of all our colleagues. The AP State branch celebrated its Silver Jubilee in the year 2004 and we look forward to many more such celebrations. It was only in the year 2014 when our state was divided for political reasons that we also has to separate and now there are two branches IADVL Telangana Branch and IADVL AP Branch with around 500
members spread over 13 districts of this new state. Come lest us strengthen our branch with more new life members and carry forward the legacy which our elders have given us.
